Secondary School Admission Timetable
The following timetable is designed to help you stay apprised of the general order of tasks you will complete when applying for independent secondary school admission. Timetables vary by region and by individual school, and day school timetables may differ from boarding school timetables. Contact those schools that interest you for exact deadlines, but keep in mind that you will most likely follow the schedule below.
Please note that some independent schools announce admission decisions on a ‘common’ decision date (e.g., March 10). Others notify students as decisions are made and continue notifications throughout the summer.
Don’t be discouraged, however, if you begin your school selection process later than the one that follows.
Fall
- Research schools.
- Contact two to six schools for more information and applications.
- Register for the SSAT or other required admission tests.
Winter

- Verify that teacher evaluations, other letters of recommendation, and current school transcripts have been sent to the school(s) to which you are applying.
- Visit each school for a tour and an interview.
- Check to make sure that schools have received all necessary information.
Spring
- Schools notify parents of admission decision.
- Schools notify parents of financial aid decision (where applicable).
