Applying to Schools: Preliminary Research

Narrowing Your Search

Once you understand your options in independent school education and you have determined a working list of priorities, it’s time to do some preliminary research. We recommend that you look through a guide to independent schools, such as those offered by

NAIS: The National Association of Independent Schools
SSATB: Secondary School Admission Test Board
TABS: The Association of Boarding Schools

Additional guide books from educational organizations and commercial publishers are available through your local public library or bookstore, and provide:

  • Descriptions of individual schools
  • Academic and extra-curricular programs
  • Tuition and fee information
  • Guidelines regarding admission procedures and financial aid
  • Name, phone number, and e-mail address of the admissions contact
  • The school’s web address
